PRAXIS 99 - A Tribute to Science Fiction

WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER
Praxis will always be "The official Tribute to Mark Lenard" in homage to the fact that Mark Lenard once said that 'the fans must come first, for without them, we (the actors and actresses) would amount to nothing.' In return we the fans want to pay our respects to those great people whose imagination and vision provided goals and dreams to strive for in the sci-fi and fantasy realms.

The Praxis Foundation, after much discussion about who should be our next honoree has decided that Praxis '99 will honor the Sci-Fi & fantasy genre as a whole,for the many years of joy, wonder, and imagination it has wrought.

As we look to the future of Praxis, we have found there are many ways to keep this wonderful tradition that began in 1998 moving forward. Plans for Praxis 2000 and 2001 are already underway. Praxis 2000 will honor and tribute a man whose love of the skies and dream for the future have brought many technologies to life.. Gene Roddenberry. Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek in the 60's and in the past 30 years it has continued a journey of wonder and excitement. More recently (many thanks to Majel and Eugene Roddenberry jr.) we are now seeing his lost manuscripts come to life in a weekly series, Earth: Final Conflict.

In 2001 we plan to honor Jim Henson,the man who gave us years of entertainment via; Labarinth, Muppet Treasure Island,(plus many others) and now...Farscape.

Why do we do this? Simply because we appreciate what these individuals and sci-fi in general has offered to the viewing audience for so many years. Behind the mask and pomp and circumstance of technology, lies those great minds whose motivation was to not only entertain us, but spark the fires of curiosity and imagination and allow us to dream the impossible dreams.

As for the beneficiary of our endevours,we have chosen children's organizations. Our reasoning for this is two fold; In 1998 we chose the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation because JDF was a charity that Mark Lenard supported for many years, this year we have chose the ADA because of the many youth programs that they are involved in above and beyond the research.

The ADA-Youth Programs takes helping children with diabetes a step beyond research. This program is dedicated to providing programs which not only educate children but also help them cope with this crippling disease. A very good example of this is the weekend camp that his held over Halloween weekend. When other children are out getting dressed up and trick-or-treating for candy, the ADA-Youth Programs offers a weekend camping trip. This weekend camp can cost each child over a thousand dollars, and many families (after having to endure the expense of treatment, medications and insulin, etc) just can't afford it. That's where we come in. Though our event, we hope to sponsor many of those children who would otherwise not be able to attend. In this way everyone can see the moneys that we raise hard at work helping these children.

A Praxis Foundation Special Dedication

As many of you probably already know, on Friday June 11, 1999, Deforest Kelly passed away after a long illness. D Kelly will always be remember for his role as the ever loving country doctor on Star Trek. We will all remember those special moments of interaction between McCoy and Spock as they entangle themselves in the bittersweet ups and downs of friendship, loyalty, and comraderie.

Each of us will reflect on this loss in our own special and individual way and each of us will miss him deeply.. but to each of us, he will live on in our fond and charished memories of all that he gave to his friends, family, and fans alike.

With this in mind, the Praxis Foundation has decided to DEDICATE Praxis 99 to Deforest Kelly. This dedication will not be like the Memorial Tribute to Mark Lenard at Praxis98. Though we are setting aside a special time for reflection during the Saturday evening banquet, there will be no overall Memorial Service at the end of the weekend.
